one of the 1-3 dermal bones of the circumorbital series forming, when present, the dorsal margin of the orbit and lacking sensory canals. The fossil Pholidophoridae had 3 supraorbitals, many modern fishes have 1 or 2, Amia and more advanced Teleostei have none
